The R8 is in its twilight years, but you wouldn't know it from looking inside. That tally included helpful performance hardware like $1,400 for Dynamic Adaptive Steering and $3,500 for laser headlamps, but most of it was dedicated to visual and luxury touches. On top of the base price, my tester added nearly $26,000 in options. In total, Audi says this car is 67 pounds lighter than its AWD sibling, at least before you start piling on the options.Īnd speaking of piling 'em on, the Spyder test model that Audi loaned me did exactly that. (You can add much of this equipment back in à la carte, of course.) In exchange, the R8 RWD gains a larger anti-roll bar up front and substitutes a solid rear axle in place of the Quattro's hollow unit. Out go the brilliant magnetic ride adaptive dampers and electronically controlled limited-slip differential (fear not - what's substituted is still a legit LSD), along with carbon ceramic brakes, carbon fiber side blades, rear wing and laser headlamps. ![]() Of course, you don't just lose out on a couple of prop shafts and a front differential for that money - you lose power (the Quattro comes with 602 hp and 413 lb-ft) and you take a meaningful hit to standard equipment levels, both in terms of visual and actual performance parts. Mercilessly flog the V10 on a race track or on a mountain road as I did, though, and you'll be staring down single-digit fuel efficiency and contemplating making a donation to the Rainforest Alliance to salve your guilty conscience. On the plus side, reduced parasitic driveline drag yields improved efficiency the EPA rates the 2WD R8 at 14 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined, gains of 1, 4 and 2, respectively, over the AWD car. Away from racetracks, however, those are such slight differences as to only be lamentable by the most pedantic of spec snobs. It also tops out at 200 mph, 4 mph before the AWD model packs it in. To be clear, this topless rear-drive model is about 0.2 seconds slower to 60 mph than an R8 Spyder with Quattro - 3.5 seconds instead of 3.3. ![]() The R8 may be remarkably docile and tractable for a supercar, but it never turns a wheel without feeling special. Importantly, that underlying gravitas is also present when you're trundling along in traffic, especially if you play with the shift paddles. Manually shotgunning the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox into a lower gear, sending the V10 racing to its 8,700-rpm zenith purely for the amusement - or vexation - of fellow motorists is a never-ending temptation. ![]() Make the game hard so that better players have the best chance and greater flexibility in finding structural roster advantages that are completely moot in shallow, RB-dominant Flex 9 formats. You have to really work on your league to change your formats to at least Flex 10, full-PPR and then evolve to SuperFlex 11, which is ideal. But remember, what they say is luck is often skill because the skilled players know where they can get lucky. It’s QBs ranked in the teens who are going to provide the most surplus value. I’m firmly in the camp of not valuing QBs as highly as most even in SuperFlex formats, for reasons I explain here. But you definitely want to downgrade running QBs here, as well as in leagues that give a point for every 20 passing yards instead of every 25 these are pocket-passer rules. Remember, the QB1 (meaning top-scoring QB) has been the 13.3rd QB drafted, on average, since 2018. We have no idea who those QBs are going to be. And perhaps two or three more will do that, too. Maybe you can project Patrick Mahomes for 40 touchdown passes, and Mahomes alone, but we know someone else is going to throw 40 or 35-plus, even irrespective of the new 17-game context. The 12th QB who is taken very late can easily throw 33 touchdowns and then becomes a key asset. Remember, all QBs have a high-touch floor. Now what about different QB formats? There’s a common misperception that scoring TD passes six points (instead of the more common four or even three) increases the value of the QB position in one-QB leagues. Travis Kelce in this format is more valuable even than in Flex 10. In a Flex 9, you should care way more about drafting a TE you think can be a Top 2 scorer at his position than a WR. What about TE? The less players you have, the more important TE is since the TE requirement is the same regardless. Again, in Flex 10, full-PPR, a WR-dominant draft is more likely to win than a RB-dominant one. A wide-receiver dominant draft is more likely to win but still not more likely than a RB-dominant one. What about Flex 9, full-point PPR? The wide receivers are slightly more valuable. Weekly pickups via waivers are far more plentiful and thus require much less acumen and foresight. This is super boring and also makes the league far more random, and the draft is far less meaningful. You should probably take three in the first five picks. So in Flex 9, half-point PPR, forget all my rules about picking WRs over RBs in the second and third round. 2 and flex WR spots because it’s hard to make lineup decisions when your backups are so close in projected points to your starters. All I’ve done is given myself weekly headaches at the No. ![]() “But Mike,” you say, “just keep drafting those great WRs.” Sure but my depth is not as valuable as the comparable starters who other managers are getting after they have secured two top RBs (or at least plausible top RBs). It’s almost like making WR quarterback in that it doesn’t pay to draft them early when there are such screaming values in the middle rounds. That means there are just too many receivers to go around. There are going to be maybe a half dozen teams with TWO top 24 receivers and then every other team has their No. Even if everyone is starting a WR in flex, and they won’t, there are just 36 receivers active in a 12-team league. Here’s the key takeaway if you play Flex 9 and especially when it’s half-point PPR: You have to prioritize RBs. It’s also critically important in draft strategy. This is not just important in auction leagues, where if you have limited lineups the only rational strategy is stars and scrubs, given there is no penalty for overpaying given that $1 and free agent pickups have such high value. My leagues are double flexes and even triple flexes (often with one SuperFlex, meaning a second QB qualifies). The best advice I can give anyone serious about this fake game is to have more starting roster spots and go full-point PPR. (Though of course picking the best players beats structural advantages 100 times out of 100.) In fact, it actually makes it plus-expected value, meaning that doing it will increase your odds of winning. Flex 10 puts “zeroRB,” where you draft at most one RB in the first six rounds (and obviously no QBs), firmly in play. The most common ways to address this are Flex 10, full-PPR leagues. I mean, I hate the out-sized importance of the position in our scoring and in our structural strategies. And so are the shotguns, the chastity belts, the Polecats and all the other lethal trinkets that inhabit this world. The cars, from Furiosa and Max’s “War Rig” to Joe’s souped-up, lowrider-inspired monster truck, are beautiful. Like in A Clockwork Orange, Miller doesn’t just open your eyes, he keeps them yanked ajar until long after they start tearing up. The wives are also colourfully named: The Splendid Angharad, Capable, Toast the Knowing, The Dag and Cheedo the Fragile. “We’ll be McFeasting at the gates of Valhalla!” isn’t normal conversation anywhere except in and between The Citadel, Bullet Farm and Gas Town, where the War Boys equipped with their Blood Bags (humans) ask the others to ‘witness’ them before their chrome-sprayed faces are ripped apart by the earth-shaking explosions, bullets and sandstorms. ![]() That isn’t to say it’s purely functional even with such little dialogue, Miller inserts an emotional intensity in Fury Road, amplified by neologisms that bring authenticity to this universe. Miller also runs a chainsaw through the screenplay, leaving a script as sparse as throats in his fictional universe. The Victoria’s Secret model, however, remains in the form of Rosie Huntington-Whitely -better cast as one of Joe’s wives than she was in Transformers. He swaps corporate logos for a singular skull, appearing on steering wheels and Joe’s face, and replaces the muscular superhero with a bald woman with a prosthetic arm. ![]() Miller eschews the urban battleground we’re accustomed to, preferring wide, desolate open spaces reminiscent of Lawrence of Arabia. Incensed at his wives’ flight, Joe sends his entire army, kamikaze War Boys and a flamethrower guitarist, after the Breeders, Furiosa and Max. Max (a lonely Tom Hardy) is simply a passenger (and occasional gun stand) who rides along, unsure of whether he’s the hostage or a kidnapper. The plot belies the film’s title it focuses on Imperator Furiosa (a marvellous Charlize Theron) and her attempt to get the Breeders out of Joe’s vaulted harem to safety, a ‘Green Point’ across the dystopic, orange desert where both fuel and water are scarce. George Miller, the septuagenarian Australian director who made the original Mad Max trilogy with Mel Gibson, is back to direct Fury Road 30 years after the original, in what is a cross between a reboot and sequel. ![]() Fury Road doesn’t just deconstruct our expectations of what an action movie should be it puts an explosive-laden spear through it. ![]() We’ve almost taken for granted that the explosions, car chases and muscular heroes (never heroines) at their front and centre must come with product placement, a woeful script (“I don’t have friends, I got family”) and a Victoria’s Secret model in need of rescue.įury Road is a dazzling reminder of how audiences have sleepily accepted their compromised, corporatised fate, trusting it blindly in the hands of plastic superheroes who line up, like we do, in movie theatres every summer. Perhaps, like Mad Max: Fury Road antagonist Immortan Joe’s wives (creepily referred to as “Breeders”), moviegoers have become accustomed to the corporeal (and corporate, in the case of movie goers) violence meted out to them over the past few years. The same way our minds shift under the influence of drugs, so too do they shift under the influence of new information, new truths. Nosferasta: First Bite uses fish-eye lenses, cross dissolves and a swirl of colorful overlapping frames to signify shifts in ideas and mental states across generations and centuries. The powerful invade the weak and build the systems that keep the weak out. The juxtaposition of Columbus’ vampiric preying and the modern life of an immigrant join to form a paradox. The boy in Nosferasta: First Bite ends up channeled as a Rastafarian man who goes through the immigration process, becoming increasingly disillusioned with how convoluted it is. This wokeness can be metaphorically talked about as an “altered state” - an examination of history and politics that re-configures the way things are tied together to reveal a truth that was purposefully suppressed, and to transcend the propaganda of American educational and political systems and false histories. The boy begins to speak to his future self and says, “There may be some things you discover that I have not yet known.” Nosferasta: First Bite sort of reclaims the term “woke,” which has lost a lot of meaning in its proliferation through social media and co-opting in political discourse. Read More at VV - Soundtracks of Cinema: ‘Fresh’ A young Carribbean boy washed up on the beach has his neck pierced by Christopher Columbus’ fangs (yes, Columbus is a blood-sucking vampire in the short film). The title of the film, a pun between the Rastafarian movement and Nosferatu the famous vampire, looks at colonialism as a parasitic relationship where the “drug” is both a weapon of subjugation and of liberation. While Detours is concerned with the microcosmic world of drug dealings, Nosferasta: First Bite turns drugs into a metaphor that stretches centuries and empires. The city is big, there are huge spaces and Selenkina’s camera captures the cat-and-mouse game with an acknowledgement that people can and will find a way. A sequence inside of a police station, where the protagonist is questioned and forced to take his pants off, gives a glimpse at the risks and humiliations of his business. The protagonist jumps out of the bushes and runs down the street at breakneck speed. A loud bang shatters the innocence of the location. In the evening, a hushed streetside has a few people walking on it, maybe from school, maybe from work. In Detours, the deliberate mundanity of public space augments the limited interruptions that are actually caused. If the police come, what’s the quickest hiding spot or route of escape? Over time, viewers must play along and try to find the hiding spots, where things could be hidden, where figures could emerge. Composed almost entirely of motionless establishing shots - the only things that move in Detours are the people and a computer or phone screen - Selenkina’s film about Russia’s authoritarian policies on drugs is fashioned into a game of hide-and-seek. Aside from a single sequence near the beginning that features the strobing lights of a dance club, the 73-minute movie is almost completely populated with the cold, still and sterile environments of a quiet part of the city. Why is a certain tree in the middle of the frame? Why does the frame cut off at that particular corner of the street? Is something being obscured or in the way of something else behind it? As figures move through the canvases, Selenkina dares the audience to find the protagonist, a young man with bleached hair who hides drugs in the locales for his clients to find.ĭetours takes the opposite approach of most drug world-related films. The eerie stillness and tranquility of these images and locations force viewers to pay attention to the details of the compositions. Several screenshots are taken and these respective places are revealed in the real world bit by bit. The cursor traverses the street and looks at the surrounding places. Detours begins with a computer screen navigating through a Moscow neighborhood on Google Maps. ![]() ![]() To unlock anything, you have to beat "skill checks". ![]() Not all vehicles, tracks and race types are unlocked at the start. There are plenty of skits to make you chuckle but nothing really ties the experience together like a comprehensive story would. That's not to say there isn't a ton of entertaining moments between characters and within the menus themselves. You essentially pick from one of six types of races in a menu and are then placed right onto the track. There isn't much of a story represented in Cars 3: Driven to Win which may be disappointing to fans of the movie. The difficulty in the track layouts ramps up as you unlock more with the first few being quite simple and the final ones requiring a lot of tricks and drifting to emerge victorious. Although the artwork in general contains only the amount of depth akin to a typical Pixar movie, there's plenty of detail to look at in your surroundings as it all whizzes by. I particularly enjoyed the European "London's Buckingham Sprint" and "Italy's Grand Tour". The tracks have quite a good level of variety in them, too. It's not a dramatic change like in a Motorstorm game (for example) but it's enough to make you carefully choose which vehicle you want to use depending on the type of race that you're playing. Although there are no stats displayed onscreen, it's clear that choosing the cutesy little forklift Guido as opposed to the bulky school bus Miss Fritter changes the physics as you race. Of course, I need to check it out more, but the main reason I am still rewiring Reason on occasion is for Thor and Malstrom, and I could see this possibly replacing it. It is modular, has a user editable wavetable oscillator (and other osc types), a nice patch browser, the width and height of the gui is user changeable, and it sounds very decent so far for a free synth. You design the signal flow for voices and use a VoiceMixer to convert that into a single stereo signal that can then be processed by a single static effect section. It seamlessly combines polyphonic voice and static effect processing. ![]() Thanks everyone for your input, lots of stuff to chew on in this thread, keep 'em coming :Dīut there is also the option of going with a fully modular synth like Sonigen ( ), because you get experience with assembling the basic components of sound synthesis.ĭo you use this synth much? How do you disconnect a patch cable? Also, I'm not sure what is meant on the site and in the manual by 'static effect'. This is a good start for learning synthesis: ġ5 minutes into it and it's turning out much better than it had any right to be. I just want to figure out what exactly am I oscillating when I mess with the LFO. At this point I'm not even touching the presets. I'm less concerned with the quality of the sounds at this point than being able to understand what exactly am I doing to the sound when I move a knob. It is no wonder that syntorial seems like such a good idea. There is even a whole market built around selling presets. It is assumed that the user will already know how synthesis works and how to design sounds, or will just resort to using presets. Even in a daw, understanding routing seems to be a major beginner hurdle.Īnother thing is that none of the soft synths that I have seen (outside of Reason and modular environments) have manuals (or a video series) that explains what the parts are, how they work, how they work together, what the parameters are, and how to create even basic sounds, i.e., fundamental synthesis stuff. Knowing how a synth is routed is helpful in understanding how the parts work together. Limitations can be a good thing.ītw, something that I don't see on any of the synths mentioned in this thread is some indication in the gui of how the parts are routed, which is something that experienced synth users take for granted. Having multiple synths on hand isn't conducive to focusing on learning basic synthesis, much less learning the sound of a particular synth, imo. A beginner reading this thread will probably download one, jog through a bunch of presets (maybe finding some sounds (s)he likes, maybe not), maybe make some music with it, download another looking for different. Look in this thread alone, and there must already be over a dozen synths mentioned as being the best beginner synth. To avoid synth hopping and preset hopping. You can focus on one synth at a time, yes, but why stay there? My opinion is that you don't have to use just one synth to learn synthesis on. And it's all clearly separated so you can take one step at a time. There's the oscillator section, filters, envelopes, modulation, you name it. The U.I might look a tad over whelming like massive but the reason I like it so much is because everything is perfectly layed out. If you want to pay for a synth I would recommend zeta2. It's a synth with all the basics and sounds beautiful to me with some good patching. So if your going the free route use Charlatan. But if you start with one synth, learn it, you can use basically any other synth out there with a lot less confusion. Yep!! It all indeed looks very complicated. I kind of understand the very basics (start with a wave and modulate its parameters with other waves) but I'm looking for a synth that would allow me to try out the different approaches, tools and types of modulation in a logic manner. A screenshot of a Massive patch gives me a migraine :P ![]() I've been getting curious about synths lately and I'm a bit tired of being dumbfounded everytime I look at those interfaces with all the ADSHR and LFO and filters and shit. ![]() I'm mostly a rock/metal guy who's been perfectly happy so far recording with amp sims and basic mixing tools (EQ, comp, reverb). |
